$38 million in disaster relief for north-west Queensland welcome
Leader of The Nationals David Littleproud has welcomed the announcement of an additional $38 million towards large-scale disaster recovery efforts for flood-affected communities across north-west Queensland.
Mr Littleproud said it was crucial to have bipartisan support between the Federal and State Governments for extra funding including;
- $21.5 million for primary producer disaster recovery grants up to $75,000.
- $11.5 million for critical repairs and increased flood resilience at Cloncurry Airport.
- $5 million increase to the previously announced emergency fodder package.
“The Nationals welcome this important announcement during an extremely difficult time for north-west Queensland and encourage the government to make it easy for producers to access the disaster grants, like the Coalition did in 2019,” Mr Littleproud said.
“The challenges that many of the producers have now is because it’s so wet, they can’t move livestock. There are some big challenges that are coming. The loss of livestock will be devastating as this event unfolds.
“Queensland Premier David Crisafulli is doing an outstanding job in acting swiftly and taking this event extremely seriously and I thank him and the Prime Minister for this additional, much-needed funding.”
Mr Littleproud added it was important the community looked after one another over the coming days and weeks.
“The mental health of our farmers and what they are experiencing right now cannot be understated. Further assistance will be needed to support communities dealing with the trauma of these floods and it’s important the Western Queensland Primary Health Network plays a key role with local councils in delivering those services.
“It is also vital that services are on the ground and there is use of the Regional Investment Corporation. This means zero interest and zero repayments of loans, so farmers can restock and refinance some debt, particularly after this event.”
