Our Story

From pioneering icons like Burke and Wills, sporting champions – Australian Diamonds and Queensland Firebirds netball captain Laura Geitz, cricketer Matthew Hayden, rugby league legends Arthur Beetson and Darren Lockyer – to Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop and the birthplace of Australia’s commercial aviation through Qantas, Maranoa’s history is rich, based in fact and is better than any fictional story you’ll find.

An Exciting Future

While our past is steeped in tradition, our future is most exciting as we truly live in a wonderful region – full of opportunity and diverse industry – the people of Maranoa make a significant contribution to Australia through agriculture, horticulture, coal, oil and gas industries.

Our region’s economy is driven by thriving and resilient agriculture industries, an innovative small business sector and manufacturing. From cereals to cotton, almost every crop variety is grown in Maranoa. As one of the nation’s most precious food bowls – from fruit and vegetables grown on the Granite Belt; juicy Chinchilla watermelons; pork, wine and navy beans from the South Burnett; beef grazed on the Channel Country and sold at Australia’s largest cattle-selling centre in Roma – Maranoa is integral to our country’s fresh produce.
