Bipartisan support for new Western Queensland radar welcomed by Leader of The Nationals

Communities across Western Queensland will soon have access to better weather forecasting after Labor announced it would match the $10 million commitment put forward by the Coalition towards a new weather radar in Western Queensland.

On Tuesday, Minister for Emergency Management Senator Jenny McAllister announced Labor would support the commitment, which was pledged by Leader of The Nationals David Littleproud and Leader Of The Opposition Peter Dutton during a visit to the flood-impacted community of Thargomindah on Monday.

Mr Littleproud said the announcement of bipartisan support for the project was welcome and the weather radar would be an asset to communities across Western and Outback Queensland.

“The announcement of Labor matching the Coalition’s commitment towards installing a new weather radar near Quilpie is most welcome, especially as communities across the Maranoa electorate continue to feel the impacts of this significant flooding event,” Mr Littleproud said.

“In recent days, I’ve heard first-hand harrowing stories of survival from locals facing these flood events.

“If families had been given more notice, they would have easily had time to get to safety, which is why this project is so important, and I thank the government for matching the Coalition’s commitment to ensuring this vital piece of infrastructure is delivered for the region.”

As the flooding event continues for many Maranoa communities, Mr Littleproud reminded locals that support is on offer for those who need it.

“There are a number of different support measures in place for those impacted communities and I urge everyone to take care, and remember, if it’s flooded forget it.

“I also want to encourage everyone, once the flood waters recede, to come and experience Outback Queensland for themselves, as supporting our tourism economy is the best way to help these communities get back on their feet.”
