Boosting mobile coverage in Bulloo

Bulloo is set to benefit from new and improved mobile coverage thanks to Round 5A of the Australian Government’s highly successful Mobile Black Spot Program, Maranoa MP David Littleproud announced today.

“I know how frustrating it is to be talking on the phone or browsing the internet and then lose service, that’s why I’m pleased to see four Mobile Black Spots in Bulloo will be addressed under this latest round of the Program,” Mr Littleproud said.

“The community has raised the issue of poor service in these areas and I’m pleased to be part of a Government that is listening and delivering solutions.

“This is a great outcome for Bulloo and these new macro cell base stations will make a big difference to those living in our rural communities.

“The sites at Dynevor Downs, East Thargomindah and Thargomindah Town, as well as the new Cunnamulla to Thargomindah – Bulloo base station are set to provide improved mobile coverage for the local community, allowing visitors and locals alike to stay connected, access education services, conduct business and remain in contact with family and friends.

“Importantly, Round 5A includes funding to trial new approaches to delivering mobile coverage in the bush by allowing mobile carriers to share infrastructure – I’m pleased to see Maranoa right at the forefront of this new approach.

“We’ve funded a trial solution of seven base stations from Thargomindah to Waihora, including at East Thargo, Dynevor Downs, Bulloo, Paroo and Eulo that will allow all mobile network operators to provide services, reducing costs while also providing new coverage from more than one carrier.

“This is the first time this approach has been commercially trialled in Australia, and I am proud to see that trial taking place in Maranoa.

“I have been very vocal about my support for mandated roaming and this trial is a step in the right direction towards delivering the secure and reliable mobile network that regional Australians need and deserve.

“Nine macro cell base stations have been funded across Maranoa under this latest round, and are scheduled to commence shortly.”

The Federal Government has committed $20.5 million to fund 67 new mobile base stations across Australia under Round 5A, collectively delivering over 12,000 square kilometres of new and improved handheld coverage. This brings the total number of base stations being funded under the Mobile Black Spot Program to over 1,270 base stations, representing a total investment of over $875 million.

The full list of base stations funded under Round 5A of the MBSP is available on the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications website.
