Leader of The Nationals David Littleproud is calling for a full national response in relation to devastating floods in western Queensland.
Mr Littleproud said the response should match what was required in the 2019 floods, after catastrophic flooding in Julia Creek and Winton saw the loss of up to half a million cattle.
It comes as Category D funding for flood-impacted victims has been announced by the Prime Minister, plus $2.5 million in joint funding to drop fodder for impacted cattle.
“Immediate, large-scale support is desperately needed for western Queensland,” Mr Littleproud said.
“I have spoken with the Prime Minister, the Opposition Leader and the Queensland Premier, to thank them for this funding.
“This disaster requires a bipartisan approach, to ensure locals get the assistance they need. We back any measure in relation to providing support, including the request of the Australian Defence Force, if that is made by the Queensland Government.”
Mr Littleproud is currently visiting Quilpie to speak to locals about the assistance on offer.
Areas including Jundah, Stonehenge, Yaraka, and Windorah are at risk of losing their livestock, as well as significant infrastructure and machinery damage.
“The full extent of the damage is still unknown but it’s important my community knows they are not alone during this crisis.
“Our outback locals are some of the most resilient people in Australia, but at times like this, they need to know that there is support available and I thank the government for working with me to ensure this will be provided.”
Category D funding is considered for exceptional circumstances, for severely affected communities.
