Powering Communities program saves power bills for Quilpie group

Seven community groups in the Maranoa electorate have had a win under the new government program to lower energy costs, support local jobs and help reduce global emissions.

Federal Member for Maranoa David Littleproud congratulated groups across the region, who will share in $67,700 under the Powering Communities Program.

In the Quilpie area, the Quilpie Club will receive $11,985 towards installation of solar panels at the Club.

“Energy bills are often one of the biggest overheads for not-for-profit organisations,” Mr Littleproud said.

“Whether it be a sports club, a community kindergarten or a community radio station, by helping to reduce power bills, the grants will ease the financial pressure these organisations face, so they can better focus on meeting the needs of their local communities.”

Mr Littleproud acknowledged the valuable role of these social hubs in communities.

“We recognise many have done it tough during COVID-19 and this program will help them to do what they do best, which is serve and support the community.”

Thousands of community organisations sought grants of between $5,000 and $12,000 to help lower their energy bills by installing solar panels or a battery; upgrading air conditioners, hot water systems or refrigerators with more efficient models; replacing lighting with LEDs; or conducting an energy audit.

The Powering Communities Program will help community groups across the nation get control of their energy use, while helping to play a part in reducing global emissions and ensure a healthy environment for future generations.
