$1 million worth of projects for practical, creative outcomes in Blackall-Tambo region

Expanded internet coverage, a light installation and landscaped parks are key goals for the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council, thanks to a $1 million investment through the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Programme, Maranoa MP David Littleproud said.

“This funding is part of the Federal Government’s $8 billion drought response, to upgrade local infrastructure and give people more reason to get involved around the community,” Mr Littleproud said.

“The goal is to provide short-term support through the drought by boosting local employment, public facilities and bringing people together for some good times.

“While there has been general rain in the region, many missed out and it takes more than one or two wet events to get out of drought.

“One of the great things about DCP is that funds are driven down into local groups who have a say in which local is contracted to make the upgrades.

“When community groups make these informed decisions, they are justifying projects that are worthwhile for that sports club or community.

“Drought certainly impacts on how we manage our businesses and personal lives, but it does not have to change how we get involved and support local groups and the community.”

DCP-funded projects in the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council include:

  • Extension of local area network to provide internet coverage to farthest parts of the Shire;
  • Build a back-up fuel supply depot in the Council yards to enable regional supply in times of natural disaster;
  • Kitchen upgrades, shed and fencing extension at the Western Sports Complex, Tambo;
  • Canteen extensions at Blackall Saleyards including shaded seating and landscaping;
  • Landscaping parks and building a play area;
  • Artistic light installation to attract tourists for overnight stays in Tambo;
  • Water and sewerage mains upgrades.

All Maranoa council regions are eligible to apply for funding through the Federal Government’s $300 million Drought Communities Programme Extension round.
