New project to protect native bird species in Southern Downs

The swift parrot and regent honeyeater, whose habitat includes the Southern Downs, will benefit from $238,300 in funding under the Coalition Government’s Threatened Species Strategy Action Plan.

Federal Member for Maranoa David Littleproud thanked the Quoll Society of Australia for being part of national efforts to recover some of our most precious threatened wildlife.

“The Society’s Stepping Stones in the Southern Downs project will restore habitat and expand remnant vegetation supporting the swift parrot and regent honeyeater across the Southern Downs local government area,” Mr Littleproud said.

“Their work will include plantings, fencing to exclude herbivores and improving food resources and shelter for these threatened birds and many other fauna species.”

Conservation and restoration projects across Australia have been allocated a share of $12 million funding through the $100 million Environment Restoration Fund.

Mr Littleproud said that the successful projects span all states and territories and will deliver practical action on the ground to protect more than 60 priority threatened species.

“These community-led activities will help improve the trajectory of our most precious native wildlife with a range of flow on benefits for other species that share the same habitat.

“Projects announced today will also drive forward action under the Government’s recently announced Threatened Species Strategy Action Plan, which sets a pathway to coordinate practical conservation efforts for our threatened species.”
