Maranoa MP welcomes home our Olympic heroes

The celebrations of Australia’s record-breaking performance at the Olympics will continue on home soil as our triumphant Olympians returned to Australia on Wednesday.

The Maranoa electorate was well represented at the Paris games with six Maranoa champions donning the green and gold for Australia.

Among the first to welcome back the Australian Olympic team was Leader of The Nationals and Federal Member for Maranoa David Littleproud who said all six competitors had done themselves and their nation proud.

“The Paris Olympics was truly a historic event for our country, and I was delighted to see so many Maranoa champions represent Australia,” Mr Littleproud said.

“Warwick’s Harriet Hudson put in a gutsy performance in the Double Sculls, while Ben Armbruster and Charlotte Caslick did Stanthorpe proud in swimming and Rugby 7s.

“Kingaroy’s Taliqua Clancy came so close to a medal in beach volleyball, while Longreach’s Patrick Tiernan broke the Australian men’s 10,000-meter record, which had been held by Robert de Castella for 40 years.”

Also among the group of Maranoa champions was Allora’s Matthew Denny, who Mr Littleproud said captured the imagination of the nation by winning bronze in the men’s discuss.

“Matthew used missing out on a medal by the length of a beer can at the Tokyo Olympics, and the support of everyone back home, as inspiration to claim Australia’s first-ever discus medal,” Mr Littleproud said.

“It was a truly inspiring performance and one I’m sure will be remembered by everyone for many years to come.

“I congratulate all six of Maranoa’s Olympians on their fantastic efforts in Paris and I’m sure everyone in the Maranoa electorate will join me in giving them a heroes welcome.”
