A passion for music has helped inspire one Longreach youngster to be named a winner of the ABC Heywire Competition.
In its 26th year, the ABC Heywire Competition allows young regional, rural, and remote students to enter the national discussion as well as drive projects that contribute to the well-being of their peers, their schools, communities, and themselves.
Detailing the challenges of learning classical music in a remote community like Longreach helped 16-year-old Malcolm’s audio entry be noticed among the many worthy entrants of this year’s competition that came from all corners of Australia.
Leader of The Nationals and Member for Maranoa David Littleproud congratulated Malcolm and said his story captured the joys and challenges of the arts in Outback Queensland.
“One thing that came through loud and clear from Malcolm’s story was his love for his hometown of
Longreach,” Mr Littleproud said.
“From hearing Malcolm’s story, his hometown has not only helped shape his passion for music but has also helped inspire him to pursue it even further via modern technologies such as online lessons.
“Malcolm’s story highlights that pursuing your dreams is possible regardless of where you live, and I
congratulate him and all of the winners of this year’s competition.”
The winners will now gather for an all-expenses-paid trip to the Heywire Regional Youth Summit, which will be held at Parliament House in Canberra early next year.
