Maranoa MP pays tribute to Richard ‘Darby’ McCarthy

“Darby McCarthy’s family and friends have lost a loved one; a great and selfless man,” Maranoa MP David Littleproud said.

“My deepest condolences go out to them during this sad time.

“Darby was born in the Cunnamulla district and at age nine discovered his passion and talent for horses while working at Yakara Station south of Thargomindah.

“It’s easy to run off Darby’s list of achievements as a trailblazing jockey, but undoubtedly he faced hurdles along the way that many of us couldn’t imagine.

“Maranoa will remember Darby not only for his magnificent racing career – which included three Stradbroke Handicap wins, an AJC Derby, an Epsom, three Melbourne Cup attempts, competing in Europe, and more than 1000 race wins – but for who he was.

“A motivator and mentor, Darby inspired and worked with Indigenous youth and helped shape the racing industry.

“It’s saddening to know Darby isn’t with us anymore.

“His story, determination and attitude are an inspiration to all of us: aim higher and use our talent to help shape a better world.”
