Protecting the Paroo from Pests

Maranoa MP David Littleproud today announced the Upper Paroo Sustainable Production Group (UPSPG) – based west of Charleville – will conduct a feral pest control program with $10,000 secured through the Federal Government’s Communities Environment Program (CEP).

“Wild dogs, foxes, cats and pigs destroy habitats and native vegetation along the Paroo River so I welcome UPSPG’s initiative to address these concerns,” Mr Littleproud said.

“UPSPG will invest $10,000 in running a trapping workshop, purchasing and building tools to assist in trapping and baiting programs and conducting targeted bait runs along the Paroo River.

“I look forward to seeing the outcome from UPSPG’s pro-active approach to managing invasive pests.

“Results will be recorded and this information will be very handy when it comes to moving forward with pest management practices in the future.

“The pest management project will commence in early 2020 and is to be completed by December next year.

“Making sure native species and vegetation have a chance to grow with reduced interference from wild dogs, foxes, cats and pigs means we’re helping to keep our regions cleaner and greener for everyone to utilise.”

Through this round of the Communities Environment Program $22 million has been secured for community clubs, not-for-profit organisations, landcare groups and schools to address a pest or environmental issue.

Each federal electorate has been allocated up to $150,000 in 2019-20 for up to 20 projects.
