Maranoa MP David Littleproud today announced that Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) will conduct a feral deer control program with $20,000 secured through the Federal Government’s Communities Environment Program (CEP).
“Feral deer destroy native vegetation, ringbark trees, contribute to soil erosion and overgraze so I welcome SDRC’s initiative to address these concerns,” Mr Littleproud said.
“SDRC will partner with landholders, USQ and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to put in place population control mechanisms in the Ballandean area.
“I look forward to seeing the results – the feral deer population will be monitored before and after the project is completed – moving forward with other pest management practices, that information will be well-utilised.
“The pest management project will commence in early 2020 and is to be completed by June.
“Making sure native vegetation has a chance to grow without deer trampling on it or over-eating means we’re helping to keep our regions cleaner and greener for everyone to utilise.”
Through this round of the Communities Environment Program $22 million has been secured for community clubs, not-for-profit organisations, landcare groups and schools to address a pest or environmental issue.
Each federal electorate has been allocated up to $150,000 in 2019-20 for up to 20 projects.
